I had a date the other day and during our conversation, I told him I was a hypnotherapist. He gave me the typical reaction looking a little nervous and asked me what I was going to make him do and was I going to make him tell me his deep dark secrets. For any of you reading this blog, know that this is not how hypnosis works. I can’t do anything TO you and can’t make you do anything you wouldn’t do consciously. So don’t be nervous- instead, be intrigued and curious about this very healing modality and how it can help you and ultimately improve your life.
So, let’s delve a little deeper.
As a hypnotherapist, I cannot control you. This is a myth and misconception and keeps people who could really benefit from hypnosis, in fear of losing control and in turn, not seek the guidance of a good hypnotherapist. You might say you can’t be hypnotized. Not true. You go into a hypnotic state often-Highway hypnosis (Have you ever wondered how you got off the exit but you don’t remember getting there?) reading a good book and being completely absorbed, watching a moving and believing everything about what you’re seeing and hearing. These are all types of trances. It is a deep focus and being suggestible to the experience.
In hypnosis, your conscious mind works in unison with your subconscious mind to create change. You are very relaxed and when you are in a relaxed state your inhibitions lessen and you become more susceptible to direction. When you hear my suggestion, it must first filter thru through the subconscious and must be in agreement with your desire for change. If it is, then that suggestion will filter into your subconscious where change happens. If it’s not in agreement, then nothing will happen and my suggestion will be discarded.
Your subconscious is a data bank of your entire life experiences and is controlled by your inner programming. With hypnosis, we can modify that programming to be in alignment with the change you want to make.
Your subconscious is quite content where it is and needs to understand that it’s time to change. It won’t necessarily listen to your conscious mind in a non-hypnotic state. This isn’t to say that you can’t make changes without hypnosis. Of course you can and I am sure you do but with hypnosis, it’s an added boost to take you over the finish line and make that goal a reality; to positively modify your behaviors.
I’ve worked with nail biters, procrastinators, those with sleep and eating disorders, and fear of public speaking to name a few. Hypnosis has helped all of them to modify their behavior. I am sure I can help you as well.
